Jaisalmer Fort

One can get a bit jaded about some of this when traveling in India, but I must admit that when first walking up the stone road into the Golden Fort at Jaisalmer, past the wooden gates with spikes sticking out, and under the guard towers, it is like something out of Hollywood. Only, it's real.

Rising out the inhospitable environment of western Rajasthan, it's role has changed. From violence, to tourist money.

A Working, Living Fort

People still live in this fort, which makes it unique among Rajasthan forts. The rest have either been turned into museum type places that are preserve, or else fallen into ruins. So, you can still stroll the streets here in a living environment, and even take up lodging inside.
