The Ganges is low this time of year and the ghats are dry leading down to the water.

They fill with people for as the eye can see during the Kumbh Mela, up to the top and past the temples.

Temples of the Ganga

This was a perfect backdrop for shooting, because out in a boat on the Ganges you can have the crowd facing you. The backdrop are the string of temples to Hindu gods and dieties that line the river at Varanasi. I don't think they are exceptionally old, hundreds of years probably, because much of the city was destroyed during the Moghul invasions.
